Jello Update:

A loyal reader emailed these great ideas for the Ice Cream Jello recipe:

"Hello jello! I have never done the ice cream trick, but I have folded in whipped cream for a neat effect. Tricky to hit it at just the right temp so the cream doesn't just melt. Same with folding in other colors/flavors of jello, you can create a swirl or marbled effect. Another technique is to prepare the base jello in a pan (or glass Pyrex), let it just start to firm up and then paint on other colors to create an edible picture. Here you can use other elements, like M&M's, coconut shreds, or nuts, that will partly sink into the jello to enhance your picture.

Another jello treat is to pour the prepared juice into ice cube trays. Again, wait for just the right cool temp and add a stick cut from a graham cracker. When fully frozen, you've got a popsicle! [To keep your cracker from flaking, cut it when frozen, or dip it in chocolate for a support layer and then freeze; or buy edible straws.]"

Also, be sure to read the comments from the post for more reader ideas.

COLORS

The human eye can detect more shades of
green than any other color.
Keep this in mind when selecting coloring products.
Make sure the set has many shades of green,
especially if your coloring books have many nature scenes.

After trying many different colored pencils,
I have finally chosen my top three:

1. PrismaColor
This is the one of the top brands.
While these can be expensive, they are often discounted on
Amazon and the big box stores. Sam's carries a nice 36 set.
I have found sets for less than 50cents a pencil.
There are 5 different types of Prismas for different
coloring needs. I invested in this brand because the colors
match across the different types, very interchangeable.
        a. Prisma Premier--artist quality, smooth and blendable
        b. Prisma Scholar--a bit harder than Premier, but still very
smooth. Less expensive, great for travel.
                                       Watch for these at the
                                       back to school sales.
        c. Prisma Watercolor--great for backgrounds and muted
colors, use with a blender pen or
                                            water brush pen
        d. Prisma Verithin--thin leads for detail coloring
        e. Prisma Erasables--I have not tried these yet.

Be sure to purchase the Prisma sharpener, eraser and blending pencil. These sometimes come with the sets as a free add on.
Other sharpeners will just chew up the pencil--very frustrating.

2. ColorIT
These are fun pencils that are a blend of Prisma Premier and
Scholar. The pencils come in a great carrying case, perfect for
travel. It includes a sharpener. I also like that the pencils are
smaller around than some of the other brands. Purchase the
72 set to get the most variety. The company often sends
    10-20% off coupon codes. www.colorit.com

3. CrazyArt
For the price, these can't be beat. $6.00 for 72 at Walmart.
These are surprising smooth to color with.
The point also stays longer between sharpening.

BUCK A BOTTLE

I will be going to a craft retreat.
One of the activities is a fundraiser for scholarships.
It is called  'BUCK  A BOTTLE'!
I'm not sure how the activity works, so I will need to report afterwards.
However, we have been asked to decorate a clean and dry water bottle.
TIP: Stuff a paper towel into the bottle to pick up the water droplets.
I used a knitting needle to move the towel around.
The idea is to cover the bottle so what is inside is a surprise.
Next, put item/items into the bottle worth at least One Dollar.
It is amazing what will fit through the opening of a water bottle!

I covered 3 bottles with patterned duck tape.
My items included: 24 pack of crayons, 8 gel pens, 12 colored pencils.
I chose these items since another activity is adult coloring, (and I love coloring supplies!)
I was tempted to put a One Dollar Bill into the bottle, then the participant could purchase another bottle! However, I went with the coloring supplies. Maybe I will do that next year.

This would be a fun activity for a holiday party gift exchange.

Decorated and filled Buck a Bottle!

ICE CREAMED JELLO

My sister was staying with our 91 year old mom.
While she was there she cooked many of the dishes we grew up with.
We were discussing old recipes and this one popped up!
Mom told us she made this when they were first married.
The didn't have a freezer, so she would go across the street to
the corner grocery and buy an ice cream cone for the ice cream ingredient!
I thought that was an ingenious solution!
The ice cream smooths out the Jello.
This was a real treat growing up.
Sonic's new Ice Cream Slush is much like this recipe.

ICE CREAMED JELLO

Any flavor or size of jello.
(Cherry or strawberry are especially yummy)
Vanilla Ice Cream

Make jello according to package directions.
Just before the jello is 'set', fold semi soft vanilla ice cream into it.
How much to fold in is a matter of taste, start with small amounts, add more if needed.
Serve Immediately

Don't Discount the Discounted Supplies

I needed more green colored pencils to fill in leaves, etc.
in 'The Blissful Scenes'coloring book from ColorIt.
I decided to try CrazyArt brand since the box of 72 has over 14 different shades of green.
These were about $6.00 at the local big box store. (yes, $6.00!)
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality!
These pencils sharpened well without breaking.
The color also laid down smoother than Crayolas.
I did find that using a pencil cushion helped with hand fatigue for coloring large areas.

Happy Coloring!

Crocheted Cactus

Just for fun I wanted to see if I could
crochet a cactus garden.
I found easy patterns on the web, then
used bits and pieces of Scrubby and cotton yarns.
The succulent bowl and rocks are from the Dollar Tree.
The frog and sign are from Joann's, and the turtle was a gift.
I now have a no work garden!
