The Unsung Hero

More great gel pen tips from this weeks ColorIt newsletter:

"Have you put our gel pen coloring tips to test yet? In our previous newsletters, we already covered gel pen care and storage tips, gel pen coloring techniques, and blending. Now it’s time to give you insider tips on how to amp up your art by using the unsung hero of every artist’s coloring arsenal--white gel pens! Check out a few tips below:
  • One of the most common uses for white gel pens is making final touches to a finished design. It helps in giving certain areas more dimension and makes the art pop.
  • If you’re using another coloring medium, such as markers or coloring pencils, it’s best to leave the white gel pen until the end as it may take a while to dry and may be difficult to color over.
  • Some colorists also use white gel pens for correcting their art when the white space they initially planned to leave out disappears.
  • Want to switch things up with your coloring practice? Invert your zentangle! Zentangle art is all about creating simple, abstract patterns using black ink on white paper. But why not grab a white gel pen and a black paper instead? This will definitely help you create more dramatic and striking designs!"

Monday Make Itz

There is a category for sculptures at the FCE cultural arts fair.
Any materials can be used.

I had taken the top off of the re-purposed light fixture
and decided to just get creative with it.

Original light fixture before the top was removed for the sculpture project.

Top of fixture was placed into concrete, 'seaglass' was added for interest.
A big thanks to the resident agronomist for help with this phase of the project.

The concrete base had to dry a few days before the form could be taken off.
The project was cleaned and spray painted with glitter paint.

Orphan un-usable keys were placed around the top. More 'bling' and texture will be added.

New Posts!

A loyal reader suggested I share tips from the resident agronomist.
The people he worked with always called him the walking encyclopedia!
So occasionally I will be sharing lawn, gardening, food preservation
and cooking HINTS FROM HUBBY!!!!

Ugh, bring in fruit/veggies from the garden or the store,
and the fruit flies tag along.
A natural way to collect these annoying critters
is to make a trap.
Take a short glass and place a piece of fruit inside.
Most fruit will work, but bananas seem to work the best.
Cover with plastic wrap. Most will cling to the glass, but use a rubber band if needed.
Poke two small holes in the wrap over the opening of the glass.
Place glass in area close to the fruit flies.
The fruit will lure the flies in and trap them inside the glass.
Empty glass and change fruit as needed.

Tuesday Tipz

“If you want a happy ending… that depends on where you stop your story.”
– Orson Welles

Color by number books are a great way to learn and practice how to shade.
The work of figuring out the light/dark areas have been done for you.
However, sometimes the numbers show through the lighter colors--
I recently read a tip--and I would give credit if I actually remembered where I read it-

Tip--chose a 'number' and go through the picture and white out the numbers in all the areas to be colored. Then color in those areas before moving on to the next color.
Most coloring utensils will color over white out, but try a sample on scrap paper first.
The numbers will 'disappear' and won't show through!

Monday Make Itz

Here are some updated pictures of the light fixture project.
This would make a great large table decoration,
or a decorating focal point for different celebrations.
More flowers/greenery will be added.
Even though this has been decorated for spring/summer,
it would lend itself to Halloween or a Harry Potter themed celebration.
After judging, solar lights may be added and placed in the whimsical garden.
Another idea would be to put small flower pots where the lights are
for succulents, such as hen and chicks.

Materials were less than $10.00.
The battery candles were found at the Dollar Tree.
These flicker like real candles, without the fire.
The flowers were found in the craft stash.
The doily was crocheted by my mom.

The top part of the fixture has been removed and will
be reused for another project--stay tuned.

Light fixture before altering.

flowers, lights and  flowers added, more to come!

Gel Pen Coloring!
(ideas can also be used with other coloring utensils such as colored pencils)

Credit goes to the current issue of ColorIt's updated news letter. Be sure to sign up so
you don't miss any issues.

  • Hatching - Great for beginners, hatching is a technique for filling a space by drawing parallel lines. To achieve a darker, more filled-in effect, you can draw your lines closer together. If you want a bit of the background to show through, trying spacing your lines out.
  • Cross-hatching - Cross-hatching, on the other hand, is all about layering hatching lines over one another. This creates more texture adds extra dimension to your art.
  • Stippling - This refers to the technique of using dots to create texture and fill in a space. By gradually changing the patterns and the density of the dots, you can achieve a gradient shading effect that will make your coloring pop.
  • Scribbling - Want to make unique art using your gel pens? Scribble! Scribbling is practically the easiest technique of all since you can experiment and let your pen run free.
  • Painting - Yes, you can paint with your gel pens, too! Simply pick your darkest gel pen, then get a slightly wet paintbrush to blend the area. This helps to blend the color slowly. (Quick tip: This technique is best used for coloring books with thick paper. Otherwise, the ink may bleed through the paper or cause it to buckle. ColorIt makes premium adult coloring books that feature thick, acid-free artist quality paper so your art is safe when you employ this technique!)

Lighting the Way and Landscaping Update

Needing to be in the bonus room--aka-the catch all junk area,
I came upon a chandelier we had changed out for a  ceiling fan.

The 'lightbulb' went off and I decided to re-purpose
this gem for a club project.
I will be posting the progress.

Before surgery.

'Innerds' taken out

The landscaping project continues--an erosion blanket made of straw was placed over
the dirt and grass seed. This helps to keep the moisture in so the seeds can sprout.
